Slightly unkempt, in need of a haircut, and unacceptable in high society, the lowly Shepherd tends to his herd of sheep. Maybe it is easier to believe in the miracles of religion when you live so close to nature.

His presence in the Nativity grouping has great symbolism for the future life of Jesus as well as man's relationship with God. He may not be wearing the silks and jewels of the Magi, but I hope that my stitching relays his importance in the story.
